The present

Sadie

I push away from Darriel, gasping for air. His blood thunders through my body, the haze settling over my brain, evoking his memories and mending the truths.

I attempt to catch my breath and wipe the sweat from my forehead, but the pressure in my chest prevents me from taking a lungful of air, and I’m suffocating.

The space is too small, the oxygen is exiguous. I step backward, nearly knocking over the coffee table.

The memories flood me all at once, making me lose timelines and faces. All I’m able to recall is Darriel and his role in it. And mine. Everyone else is a blur. Even Valian, and I know what he looks like. All I remember is his presence and people calling his name, but no matter how much I force my mind to, I can’t remember his face through Darriel’s eyes.

“You saw it, and now you know the truth.” The vampire carefully follows my retreat. “But it doesn’t change a thing.”

I lift my eyes to look at his face. “It changes everything.”

His face turns angry. “See, that, right here is why I didn’t want to tell you anything.”

“Because I will change my mind? Of course, I will change my mind, Darriel!” I start yelling. “If I run away, everyone dies.”

He gets into my face and hisses, “And if you stay, you die.”

“I’ll take that exchange.”

“No.” He shakes his head forcefully.

“Do you think I want to sacrifice myself?” I throw my hands in the air. “I don’t. I want to live. But not at the price of the rest of the human population.”

“They are not worthy of your sacrifice. No one is. A bunch of pathetic cowards.” He leans closer. “When the Gates fell, we united, but when they saw who the enemy was, everything changed. When the first poison hit, a third of the fighters ran away. They didn’t want to fight. Another third returned to their own internal wars, thinking that it would be a good time to rearrange the land. And there is a very few left from the rest, the ones who actually fought. Who do you want to save here?”

“The human race, Darriel. They are wiping us away. They are wiping you away, how can’t you see that?”

“Oh, I see it. In fact, I was so blinded by this desire to save everyone and right my mistakes that I nearly sacrificed you.” He presses his finger under my collarbone, and of course, I get all hot at the contact. “It took me a while to see that they are not worth it.”

“Not all of them are bad,” I try to reason. With him or with myself—I’m not sure.

“It doesn’t matter to me.”

“Why, Darriel?” I advance at him and raise on my tippytoes, getting into his face. “Why such a sudden change, huh?”

“It wasn’t sudden.” He swallows, looking unsure. “I’ve wanted you from the very beginning.”

“Are you talking about the time when you tried to kill me?” I ask with a snort.

“When I saw you, I knew.
